A FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER

  • Put your baby on their back for every sleep.
  • Use a firm, flat, level sleep surface with a fitted sheet.
  • Keep the sleep space beside you and free of loose or soft objects.

Start with the space you have

A newborn sleep corner does not need to look like a nursery photograph. Before making a shopping list, stand in the room where you expect to sleep and picture an ordinary night: where you will sit, how another adult will help, and what you can reach. Our suggestion is to sketch that small area first. A thoughtful layout can be more useful than a long list of accessories.

Keep the sleeping surface simple

NICHD recommends a mattress that is firm, flat and level, covered by a fitted sheet. Keep pillows, quilts, loose blankets, soft toys, bumpers, positioners and weighted bedding out of the sleep space. A padded nest or hammock is not a substitute for this setup. Inclines can allow a baby's body to slide into a position that obstructs breathing.

Car seats and sitting devices are not a baby's regular nap space. If your baby falls asleep in one, transfer them to their usual sleep surface as soon as possible.

Make the habits consistent

Place your baby on their back whenever you put them down for a nap or night sleep. Health Canada recommends a separate crib, cradle or bassinet in the parents' bedroom for the first six months. Share the routine with every caregiver rather than assuming everyone follows the same advice.

Keep the baby's surroundings free of tobacco smoke, cannabis smoke and vaping. Bed-sharing raises sleep-related risks; a separate sleep surface close to you is the recommended arrangement. These steps reduce risk, but no product or routine can promise to eliminate SIDS.

Turn shopping into a short checklist

Read the manufacturer's assembly and use instructions and check for product recalls before using a sleep product. Do the same when considering something borrowed or second-hand.

For your own comparison sheet, record the crib's exact model, the mattress dimensions it specifies, the sheet dimensions and the total cost. Keep product manuals together. Treat the product links below as places to compare options; we have not tested or approved individual listings.

Plan for the tired parts of the night

Our practical suggestion is to agree on the night routine during the day. Decide where the spare sheet lives, who can fetch changing supplies and how you will ask for help when tired. If several relatives will care for your baby, walk through the setup together instead of relying on a group message.

After cleaning or changing bedding, take a moment to reset the sleep corner. Put decorative cushions and spare clothes in their own storage area. Keep a written list of questions for your baby's clinician, especially if relatives have received different advice.

Know what furniture cannot solve

Never settle to sleep with your baby on a sofa or armchair; NICHD highlights these as particularly dangerous places if an adult falls asleep while comforting or feeding a baby.

A shopping decision is separate from a medical care plan. If your baby was premature or has a health condition, ask the clinical team how their individual instructions apply at home.
