A FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER
- Have supplies ready before you begin and wash your hands.
- Change wet or soiled diapers promptly and clean gently.
- Ask for medical advice if a rash worsens, spreads or leaves your baby very uncomfortable.
Make the routine easy to repeat
Diaper changes are one of the first jobs that several caregivers may share. Our suggestion is to arrange a small changing kit together before your baby comes home. Agree on where clean supplies live and how someone will replace them when they run low. The goal is a routine that another adult can understand without searching through several drawers.
Prepare before opening the diaper
Wash your hands and gather a clean diaper, cotton wool with warm water or fragrance-free, alcohol-free wipes, and a cloth for drying. The NHS recommends a mat or towel on the floor as a practical place for changes. If using a changing table, stay with your baby throughout; straps do not replace supervision.
Change wet or soiled diapers promptly. Before starting, put supplies within your reach so you do not have to walk away mid-change.

Clean gently and finish the job
Clean the diaper area thoroughly but gently, including skin folds. For girls, wipe from front to back. For boys, clean around the penis and testicles without pulling back the foreskin. Dry the area before putting on a clean diaper. Wash your hands again after the change.

When the skin looks sore
Nappy rash may appear as sore or raw patches, bumps, dryness or discomfort. Colour changes can be less obvious on darker skin, so also notice texture and how your baby responds. Keep the area clean and dry, use a properly fitting diaper, and avoid talcum powder or antiseptic lotions on the rash.
Ask a clinician for advice if the rash does not settle, gets worse, spreads or makes your baby very uncomfortable. If your baby seems unwell, seek medical advice promptly instead of treating the problem as a shopping issue.

Build a kit that fits your home
Our organising suggestion is to separate today's small supply from bulk stock. Use one basket you already own or a drawer before deciding whether a dedicated caddy would help. Leave a short restocking note with the size and type of diaper you are using, so whoever shops next can check the right details.
If you plan to use reusable diapers, write down who will wash them, where they will dry and how you will handle outings. Check each manufacturer's care instructions. For disposable options, compare the price per diaper as well as the packet price. A smaller first pack lets you evaluate fit and your own preferences before buying in quantity.
Keep the links in perspective
The products below cover a diaper, an optional wipe option and a changing surface. They are categories to browse, not a claim that a particular listing prevents rashes. Cotton wool and water are already one of the cleaning options described above.
Before paying, check the product's size range, ingredient information where relevant, quantities and care instructions. Keep a simple note of what you liked or found awkward. Your next purchase can then respond to your experience rather than a larger advertised bundle.
